Turbocharging the Boxster/Cayman platform for the 718 generation was controversial, but the the decision was still rooted in efficiency and performance. Our exhaust solutions have aimed to extract the most sound potential for the platform and now our latest development aims to deliver tangible performance as well. Our new Performance Intercooler for the turbocharged 718 models features a larger inner core and billet-machined end caps, and fits in place of the factory unit for better cooling and more efficient performance.
SOUL partnered with a GRIDLIFE Time Attack–built 718 Cayman S to put the SOUL Performance Intercooler through a real-world race environment and address one of the most significant limitations of the platform under sustained load: heatsoak. This Cayman has maximized performance mods including a standalone low-temp coolant circuit with 2500 gph pump and 3 gallon tank in the frunk and is running E85 with full bolt on upgrades. COBB Accessport data logs during every session showed rapidly climbing IAT temps during sessions which leads to pulled power and poorer lap times. The aggregated data sets below show a clear difference in the intercoolers’ ability to control IATs during sustained WOT operation.
The results were significant:
Factory Intercooler:
+3.36°F/sec IAT increase at WOT
SOUL Performance Intercooler:
+1.00°F/sec IAT increase at WOT
That represents a 70% reduction in the rate of IAT increase.
Previously, IAT’s were peaking around 190 degrees after 2.5 laps. With the SOUL Performance Intercooler, IAT’s remained stable at roughly 140 degrees after 10 laps.
